Narcissistic Abuse in the Workplace

Is Your Boss a Narcissist? Recognising the Signs at Work

If you find yourself dreading Monday mornings, questioning your own memory, or leaving work feeling deflated, you're not alone. Many people who work under a narcissistic boss describe a gradual sense of confusion that leaves them doubting their abilities, judgment, and even their sense of self. It can be difficult to put your finger on what's happening, but understanding the dynamic is often the first step towards regaining confidence and clarity.

Signs of a Narcissistic Boss

Narcissistic behaviour in the workplace doesn't always appear obvious at first. In fact, it is often disguised as ambition, confidence, or exceptionally high standards.

A narcissistic boss may take credit for your achievements while shifting responsibility for mistakes onto others. Expectations can change without warning, so what was considered excellent work one day is criticised the next. They may encourage competition between colleagues, creating tension and division within the team. Publicly, they can appear charismatic and engaging; privately, they may be dismissive, critical, or controlling. And when concerns are raised, they often rewrite events in a way that leaves you questioning your own recollection.

These are common traits of a narcissistic boss and, whether intentional or not, they can leave employees feeling unsettled and constantly on edge.

The Impact of Gaslighting at Work

One of the most harmful aspects of this dynamic is gaslighting. When your experiences are repeatedly denied, minimised, or reframed, it becomes harder to trust your own perceptions. Over time, this can affect self-confidence, sleep, concentration, and overall wellbeing. For some people, the effects continue long after they have left the workplace.

Many clients I work with arrive believing they are somehow at fault. More often than not, they have simply spent too long in an environment that has caused them to doubt themselves.

If any of this feels familiar, please know support is available. Recovery from narcissistic abuse is possible, and you deserve to feel safe, respected, and secure in your working life. I work with professionals who are navigating these experiences, helping them understand what has happened, rebuild confidence, and move forward with greater clarity and self-trust.
